FTC Investigates 'Uber One' Over Alleged Consumer Protection Violations

The U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has initiated an investigation into Uber Technologies Inc.’s subscription service, Uber One, following customer complaints of unauthorized enrolments and difficulties in canceling memberships.

Launched earlier this year, the probe examines whether Uber’s practices violate consumer protection laws. It focuses on the processes for signing up and canceling subscriptions.

Uber One offers subscribers benefits such as discounted rides and delivery services for a monthly fee. As of October, the service serves approximately 25 million members.

Uber has acknowledged the FTC’s inquiries and expressed its commitment to collaborating with the agency.

Company spokesperson Noah Edwardsen stated, “We will continue to answer any questions the FTC may have about our cancelation policies. The Uber One cancelation process follows both the letter and the spirit of the law: Uber One members can easily cancel their membership in the app—in fact, the majority of those cancellations take 20 seconds or less.”

The FTC’s scrutiny of Uber aligns with its broader efforts to enforce consumer protection laws against companies using complex subscription models that may mislead consumers.

The agency has previously taken action against firms like Amazon and Adobe for making subscription cancellations challenging.

In October 2024, the FTC finalized a “click-to-cancel” rule, mandating that businesses simplify the cancellation process for consumers, making it as straightforward as subscribing.

The rule was passed in response to challenges faced by consumers when attempting to terminate recurring subscriptions and memberships.

The outcome of the FTC’s investigation into Uber remains pending.
